Arteriovenous fistulas are abnormal connections between an artery and a vein. When there is a fistula in the brain, it is referred to as an autogenous malformation (AVM). Fistulas that form close to the dura, the brain's covering material, are known as dural arteriovenous fistulas. Occasionally, AFVs can develop after birth, be congenital (present at birth), or result from trauma (acquired). Although AFVs can occur anywhere in the body, we typically find them in the head, neck, spine, and liver. The blood flow through the area can be increased when a high-pressure artery and a low-pressure vein are connected, which frequently results in both the artery and the vein growing larger. People frequently experience localized swelling, pulsing, or vibration. A bruit or persistent murmur is frequently audible when a doctor uses a stethoscope to examine the area. Similar to arteriovenous malformations, arteriovenous fistulas can be treated with endovascular embolization, microsurgery, or stereotactic radiosurgery.
