Venous thrombosis, also referred to as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), occurs when a thrombus (blood clot) forms in veins located deep within the body due to trauma to the veins or too sluggish blood flow through them. The blood clots may completely or partially obstruct blood flow via your vein. Although they can also develop in the arm, brain, intestines, liver, or kidney, DVTs most commonly occur in the lower leg, thigh, or pelvis. In addition to doing a physical examination, your doctor will review your medical history. You will also need imaging studies. Hospital therapy may be necessary for certain DVT patients. Some may qualify for outpatient treatment. Wearing compression stockings, elevating the afflicted limb or legs, and using blood thinners.
