Filters can be retrieved or permanent. An IVC filter is inserted by surgeons through a neck or groin incision. After surgery, you can usually resume your normal activities in a day or two. Your inferior vena cava, a sizable vein in your belly, is where the surgeon places the IVC filter. Blood is transported from your lower body to your heart via the inferior vena cava. To get oxygen into your lungs, your heart pumps this blood there. The IVC filter lets blood pass through, but it catches any clots in the stream before they may enter your lungs.
