Basics of Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted, and swollen veins that are usually blue or dark purple in color. They most commonly occur in the legs and ankles and can be caused by a number of factors, including genetics, obesity, pregnancy, and prolonged standing or sitting.

Symptoms of varicose veins can include aching, heavy legs, itching, and cramping. In some cases, varicose veins can also lead to more serious complications such as blood clots, skin ulcers, and bleeding.

Varicose veins are caused by a malfunction in the valves that control blood flow in the veins. Normally, these valves open and close to allow blood to flow up the legs and back to the heart. When the valves are damaged or weakened, blood can flow backward and pool in the vein, causing it to enlarge and twist.
