Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), also known as venous thrombosis, develops when a thrombus (blood clot) forms in veins deep within the body as a result of an injury to the veins or excessively slow blood flow through them. Blood flow through your vein may be wholly or partially blocked by the blood clots. The majority of DVTs occur in the lower leg, thigh, or pelvis, but they can also happen in the arm, brain, intestines, liver, or kidney. Your doctor will examine you physically and go over your medical background. Additionally, you'll require imaging tests. Some DVT patients may require hospital treatment. Others might be eligible for outpatient care. Compression stockings, elevating the affected leg(s), and taking anticoagulant drugs (blood thinners) are all forms of treatment. In rare instances, invasive treatments (catheter-based procedures) may be necessary when the DVT is severe.
