The carotid arteries, which are located on either side of your neck, supply the oxygen-rich blood that your face and brain require to function properly. Your brain cells would die if there was no blood flow. A stroke can occur when blood flow to a specific area of the brain is restricted or blocked. When you have carotid artery disease, a substance called plaque, which is made up of fat, cholesterol, and calcium builds up in your artery and narrows it. This narrowing is known as stenosis, and it can restrict blood flow. This plaque may break up and travel to a smaller artery in the brain. If this occurs, an embolism may occur. If the narrowing is severe enough, it can completely cut off blood flow to the brain, resulting in a stroke. One procedure known as carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is used to remove blockages in the normal flow of blood and reduce your risk of having a stroke. A CEA is also referred to as carotid artery surgery.
