Glomus tumor is a rare and usually benign soft tissue tumor. The glomus apparatus is part of the dermal layer of the skin and is believed to help regulate temperature. When exposed to cold temperatures, the corpus glomerulus directs blood away from the skin's surface to reduce heat loss. Although the glomus apparatus is found throughout the body, it is most densely found in the fingers and toes. Abnormal growth of the glomus body causes glomus tumors.
Glomus tumors usually appear in people between the ages of 20 and 50 but are more common in young adults. More common in women, 70% of glomus tumors are found on the hand, with a clear majority under the nail bed. Most nodules are solitary but may appear in clusters. Glomus tumors account for 1-5% of all soft tissue tumors of the hand and fingers.
